What's the difference between LTL and FTL?
LTL (Less-Than-Truckload) is for shipments that don't fill a whole trailer, typically 1 to 6 pallets, up to ~10,000 lb. You share trailer space with other shippers, which is cheaper but adds transit time. FTL (Full Truckload) gives you the entire trailer, faster transit, fewer touchpoints, and is the right call for higher volumes or time-sensitive freight.
How is LTL pricing calculated?
LTL pricing is based on freight class (density, stowability, handling, liability), weight, dimensions, origin/destination ZIPs, and accessorial services (lift gate, residential, inside delivery). Our rate engine prices all of these in real time across multiple LTL carriers.
Do I need to know my freight class?
It helps, but if you don't know it we'll calculate it from your dimensions and weight. Misclassified freight can result in costly reweigh fees, so accurate dimensions on your BOL are critical. We'll work with you to get this right on the first few shipments.
Which freight carriers does L5 work with?
Contracts with all major national LTL carriers (XPO, Old Dominion, Estes, Saia, ABF, FedEx Freight, etc.) and a deep bench of regional and specialty carriers. Our routing engine picks per lane based on cost, transit time, and damage history.
What about dedicated lanes or contract freight?
For consistent freight volume on specific lanes, we negotiate dedicated truckload rates with our network of asset-based carriers. Typically saves 10–20% versus spot-market FTL and locks in capacity during peak.
Do you handle expedited or guaranteed freight?
Yes. Expedited LTL guarantees a specific transit time. Guaranteed delivery is available on most lanes for a premium. For air freight, we coordinate with cargo airlines for time-critical moves.
How do you handle freight claims?
We file all claims on your behalf and follow up directly with the carrier through resolution. Our claims team tracks deadlines and required documentation so you don't miss a filing window.
Can you handle specialized freight (oversized, refrigerated, hazmat)?
Yes. Flatbed, step-deck, refrigerated, and hazmat-certified freight through specialized carriers. Hazmat shipments require additional documentation and proper labeling, and our compliance team will guide you through it.
